1. CHAPTER I. Organization of Regiment—Camp at Readville—Departure for New York. At the time (August 4th, ) a draft was ordered by President Lincoln for three hundred thousand militia to serve for a period of nine months, Colonel Isaac S. Burrell was in command of the Second Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia—an old militia organization of the State. I was called to Merkel, Texas, on Sunday, September 9, to preach the funeral of Sister O. J. Adcock, Sr., wife of one of the elders of the church. It was my happy privilege to labor with the church in Merkel for almost two years, and I learned to love and respect the deceased very much.
